I’m continually impressed with Ira Glass as an editor, interviewer and now with his current Showtime programme, This American Life, TV host. I honestly can’t hold how honorable this series is. I’ve watched every episode attend to succor twice and I’m level-headed reeling.

Quite simply, this is reality television or what reality television should have been before it got commandeered by posers in constructed atmospheres. Have you ever idea about why it’s called “Reality TV” when there isn’t anything accurate about it? A bunch of people who would never meet up in steady life are thrown together in a completely artificial situation-a house, an island-to compete for something equally artificial-a modeling contract, a million dollars. That’s not actual. This American Life is a hundred percent human, actual, and down to earth all the time. The stories are forthright, touching, astonishing.

It’s a testament to Ira’s skill as an interviewer that he somehow manages to bag people and drawl their stories without artifice-there isn’t an ounce of cheese or a single turn of slouch in any one of these stories. You don’t hear Ira or his staff ask a lot of questions on camera, but he must be fantastic at his job because he brings out the best in people. Also the camera shots in this series are outstanding. In one interview a 13 year dilapidated boy rallies against fancy while his red headed classmate floats dreamily though a field of grass. In another interview the viewers rep to gape Chance the Bull through the kitchen window of it’s owner. It’s elegant. All of it. It’s simply improbable. My husband and I were both teary eyed after several of these stories.

Besides meeting a 13 year obsolete boy who has sworn off fancy, you’ll visit a Chicago hot dog stand where customers and staff remark at each other in a free for all that brings out the worst in human nature, sit with a man who watches TV in his wife’s mausoleum every other day, gallop the ranch of a kind hearted Texas man who had his beloved bull cloned and you’ll probably give up meat after “smelling” an Iowa pig farm. And after every single episode you’ll feel like the human hasten isn’t headed for a enormous sad hole in set after all. You’ll feel like we’re well-behaved, like there’s hope for us because it can’t be that bleak if this is what people are really like-vulnerable, kind, racy, well-behaved hearted.

If you’re looking for more culture like this-I’d recommend The Unique Kings of Non-Fiction edited by Ira Glass and Best American Essays 2007 edited by David Foster Wallace. And for a movie that’s down to earth (if a limited quirky) Eagle v. Shark.

Ira Glass and company have been producing the lovable radio display “This American Life” for years now. Fans of the radio demonstrate will undoubtedly be enthusiastic in the television reveal.

The note is masterfully photographed, and very well produced. I understanding at first that if the television reveal was to be as effective as the radio present, it would be nearly impossible to accomplish, but apparently not so! Content-wise, it’s very similar to the radio exhibit. Every epic follows a accepted anecdote arc, but each record also features the unusual setting that the radio exhibit is known for. There’s really itsy-bitsy more to be said, especially if you are already a fan of the radio demonstrate. This is right American journalism focused on curious people who every day pass for popular. Ira Glass and his expose bring us these people’s stories and do so with broad artistry.

Often comic, sometimes shadowy, but always gripping, “This American Life” is groundbreaking television!

Three stars overall, five stars for the first film, 3 stars for the second, two stars for the third and 0 stars for Universal skimping on extras.

Part of Universal’s “Franchise Collection”, this collects all 3 “Smokey and The Bandit” movies on one double sided DVD at a reasonable mark.

I’m one of those people who don’t automatically urge to gaze a sequel of a movie that was wildly celebrated, especially if it was of one I enjoyed, for I’m in apprehension of being let down. “Smokey and The Bandit” was one of those movies. I let my friends look the sequels and give me their one sentence reviews. Usually they’d respond with a long drawn face and say it wasn’t as qualified as the first one. That was fine enough for me.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Smokey and the Bandit: Pursuit Pack! Click Here

The first “Smokey” was a right classic as well as being a substantial money maker for Universal. The second highest grossing movie of the year 1977 (something called “Star Wars” was first), it was pure fun with Burt Reynolds, Sally Field, Jackie Gleason and Jerry Reed and a few chases and wrecks. It’s serene fun and snappy paced today and has venerable quite well. It’s a moral 70’s movie though with the hairstyles, the cars, the wardrobes and CB radios. It’s worth owning objective for this movie.

It was with hesitation that I sat down and watched the two sequels. “Smokey and The Bandit II” was a bit darker especially with Burt Reynolds’ character. Dom DeLuise was a pleasurable addition to the cast, the anecdote was ok although I wasn’t fond of ALL of Jackie Gleason’s characters and I wasn’t jubilant with the ending. Collected, a decent follow up.

“Allotment 3″. Shame on Universal for trying to eke out the last bit of money from the public on this one. Jerry Reed - I deem you’re tall, but not in this one. You were no Bandit, and that mustache. If you’re a Jerry fan, try “Concrete Cowboys” for something a bit more fun. This was recycled scenes, recycled bits, and even recycled dialogue. The Sally Field role played by Colleen Camp was excruciatingly painful. Not even Fred the dog was around too long! Not even any songs by Jerry Reed in this one! I kept watching this movie for something righteous and the saving grace was being able to stare Jackie Gleason engage the spotlight. And that’s how I’ll remember this last of the trilogy, with the Spacious One making one more broad stand.

Kudos to Universal for the widescreen and the best available sound and for a decent mark. Boo command to Universal for no extras (except for trailers for the first two films) . I know I’ll gape the first one again, and if I’m in a Jackie Gleason frame of mind, maybe the third installment. And I’m satisfied to be able to have some outstanding stunt work directed by Hal Needham in my collection. Now if they’d only release the soundtrack to “Smokey and The Bandit” on CD!

THE GOOD: Smokey and The Bandit was one of the most successful moneymakers of the 1970s, although critics panned it. There are those who savor Smokey and The Bandit, as I do, and those who detest it, but most folks loved it when it was first released in 1977 and it continues to gain people over to this day. Heck, even Alfred Hitchcock conception it was one of the best movies he’d seen at that time. (This movie alone is the only reason I’d give the “pursuit pack” a rating of two stars.)

Buy,Download, Or Stream Smokey and the Bandit: Pursuit Pack! Click Here

THE BAD: Smokey and The Bandit 2. As great as I enjoyed the first Smokey movie when it came out in theaters, I was really bummed out about this sequel a few years later. Smokey 2 is simply the result of Hollywood’s frigid math: “even if this represent stinks, it will fabricate at least a quarter of the first movie’s profits on name recognition alone, and that’s a heck of a lot of money, so let’s do this turkey.” Watching Burt Reynolds & Co. phone it in (Reynolds reportedly made $5 million from this represent) is painful, but seeing the Bandit as a drunken lout really bogs the movie down. Not to mention the fact that there’s really no joy here. Gone is the fun and action and sense of spontaneous humor from the first Smokey flick; this one will leave you feeling icy and disappointed. (The only vaguely sure thing I can attribute to Smokey 2 is that my pre-teenage sister developed a enraged crush on Jerry Reed after seeing this movie.)

& THE UGLY: Smokey and The Bandit 3 was the sequel nobody asked for. It’s hard to imagine there was an precise screenplay written for this aBOMBination…and if there was a screenplay, it must have been written on a cocktail napkin. Smokey 3 is a indolent retread of scenes from the first two Smokey movies (including an opening “remember when” sequence which merely pads the film to an 80-minute running time) and not even the big Jackie Gleason can assign this mess. Originally titled “Smokey IS the Bandit”, Gleason played both roles of Sheriff Buford T. Justice and The Bandit. Test screenings (predictably) flopped; the film was reshot and sliced and diced until voila….you have Smokey 3, a exertion which never should have been given the green light in the first station. Burt Reynolds only appears in a brief, tacked-on scene at the destroy of the film; perhaps he was contractually obligated to do so?

All three “Smokey” movies are on this single (double-sided) DVD, and the trace is not too shabby. Image quality is very crisp, although there are no extra features whatsoever. However, I’d recommend buying the standalone DVD of the first Smokey movie and skipping this position, as two of the three movies in the “pursuit package” should not be pursued, but given the deepsix.

At the core of what looks on the surface to be a standard summer buddy movie is an enchanting premise: What does become of the overly sensitized male when confronted with the reality that all his closest friends are female and that he is at a complete loss to procure any groomsmen, in particular, a best man, for his wedding? It’s not an earth-shattering quandary to address, yet the residence gives rise to a lot of silly questions about what constitutes masculine behavior in our supposedly evolved society. Fortunately, director/co-writer John Hamburg (Along Came Polly) has fashioned a 2009 comedy (with co-writer Larry Levin) bulky of shrewd observations and hilarious gags that transcend formula and elevate the sage into something unique and genuinely likeable.

When sweet-natured L.A. trusty estate broker Peter Klaven decides to marry Zooey, his girlfriend of eight months, it dawns on both of them that he has no stop male friends. Whispers about his manhood and her dread of him being too clingy as a husband lead Peter to state up a series of disastrous man-dates, one being the predictable inaccurate satisfied date. However, it’s at an commence house at Lou Ferrigno’s manse that he meets his personality opposite - Sydney Fife, a slovenly, blunt albeit socially observant slacker. As it turns out, their differences complement one another in a map that makes them best buddies almost from the get-go - that and a popular obsession for the 1970’s power band Race. Naturally, Zooey starts to resent Sydney’s burgeoning role in Peter’s life - and things procure complicated before the inevitable conclusion.

Two of Judd Apatow’s familiar bag company star. Finally at the center of a major movie, Paul Rudd is ideally cast as Peter since the role takes advantage of how he combines his boyish charm and unpredictable nebbishness into a memorable character. In fact, he manages to give Peter’s awkward attempts to overcome his social scare a positive emotional resonance. We feel every painful step he takes in replicating Sydney’s free spirit, and it becomes easy to root for his success. Grand better cast here than as the self-conscious lead in last year’s Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Jason Segel offers his doughy likeability to a role that suits his casual, lumbering personality, even when he exposes an intimate secret between Peter and Zooey in a wedding party dinner toast.

Buy,Download, Or Stream I Love You, Man! Click Here

If the interplay between Rudd and Segel feels familiar from Apatow comedies like The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up, it is a coincidence that Hamburg takes fleshy advantage of to preserve the movie comically intelligent. Rashida Jones brings a raspy appeal to Zooey, although she is kept mostly at the sidelines. Also underused are Jaime Pressly as Zooey’s tart-tongued friend Denise and as Peter’s parents, J.K. Simmons (playing the same wiseass father he played in Juno) and especially Jane Curtin. Jon Favreau has a thankless role as Denise’s alpha-male jerk of a husband, while Andy Samberg makes a most unconvincing jubilant as Peter’s sleep-around, personal trainer brother. There are plenty of laughs throughout its slightly long 105-minute running time, but what may surprise you is the number of insightful moments that this affectionate, satirical comedy provides.

The United States, in general, is quite a homophobic country. Men are expected to have platonic feelings of treasure only for immediate family members, such as parents, grandparents, siblings and their maintain offspring. Sharing one’s nonsexual feelings of adore outside this puny world is basically considered taboo. In other cultures this is certainly not the case, something I had the genuine fortune to experience first hand!

I Worship You, Man does a genuine job of comparing and contrasting heterosexual women’s emotionally rich, same-sex friendships with heterosexual men’s typically barren, same-sex friendships. It exposes the hypocrisy that it’s okay for women to hug and be emotionally discontinuance and talk in graphic details about their sex lives amongst themselves, but NOT for a man to do the same accurate thing!

What a refreshing and insightful film! This sparkling memoir also compares male homosexual and heterosexual same-sex relationships and on the surface, at least, they are indistinguishable! This might be news to some people - but all well-adjusted human beings have a yearning for emotionally rewarding relationships!

And, one person can not fulfill ALL your emotional needs! It’s really that simple!

Thank you Hollywood for taking such a risk in making such a profound film with a titanic sense of humor! It shows you acquire a sure segment of the American public is customary enough to want to stare the meaning of platonic worship between men!

I’m not one of those Seinfeld fans who saw a broad decline in the indicate as the season’s came and went. I loved the final couple of seasons unprejudiced as great as any. Only the first season, where they were level-headed working with the formula to acquire it accurate, was a bit dilapidated. That said, if I was on a desert Island and could have only one season of Seinfeld to maintain and glance, it would be season four. It not only had many colossal episodes but it had many that would go down as classics, not only of Seinfeld, but all-time sit-com classics.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Seinfeld - Season 4! Click Here

There are so many gigantic episodes from season four but here are my favorites:

“The Wallet” & “The View” this was a two-parter as Jerry’s parents arrive to town so Morty can watch a relieve specialist. Morty is up in arms when he thinks his wallet is stolen in the doctor’s office. Meanwhile Unlce Leo finds a inspect that Jerry threw in the trash, a peek his parents gave him and Jerry tries to capture it befriend.

“The Bubble Boy” Jerry, Elaine, George and Susan are going up to Susan’s father’s cabin. They are asked to observe a local fan named “the bubble boy” who lives in a plastic bubble ala John Travolta in the movie. George gets there first and plays a game of Trivial Pursuit with the bubble boy and they collect into a fight. Kramer accidently burns down the cabin. One of the all-time enormous episodes!

“The Contest” Maybe the greatest episode ever…George is caught pleasuring himself by his mother who throws out her support and lands in the hospital. George, jerry, Kramer and Elaine all bet to gaze who can go the longest without doing…that…Later appearing on David On the Letterman point to, Julia Louis-Dreyfus said that the network censors would not allow them to say “masturbation”.

“The Prefer” Kramer takes a report of Elaine for her Christmas card. After she sends the recount out to everyone, including her nephew, they study that her nipple was exposed! Jerry’s girlfriend thinks she caught him picking her nose.

“The Visa” Kramer punches Mickey Mantle at a baseball fantasy camp, Babu’s visa expires and he is deported. Kramer’s explanation of the fight with Mantle is the highlight.

“The Outing” this would feature one of the all-time astronomical Seinfeld lines “Not that there is anything faulty with that” when a college newspaper reporter mistakenly thinks jerry and George are a glad couple.

“The Implant” Jerry dumps his girlfriend (Terry hatcher) when Elaine tells him that her breasts are deceptive. Kramer thinks he sees Salman Rushdie the author, in a sauna and George gets into a fight at his girlfriend’s Aunt’s funeral because he ‘double-dipped’ a chip.

“The Junior Mint” Jerry can’t remember the name of his girlfriend, only that it rhymes with the word for a female body fraction. Jerry and Kramer survey an operation and accidently toss a junior mint into the surgical opening.

“The Smelly Car” a Valet parker leaves a strong body odor in Jerry’s car. Jerry tries everything to gain the smell out and eventually gives the car away.

“The Pilot” George & Jerry’s indicate is greenlighted to have a pilot produced and they interview prosective “kramers, Georges, and Elaines”. Elaine finds Morty’s wallet…missing since that early episode, in Jerry’s Couch.

This season really had it all. I would have to say that there really was not one unpleasant episode in the entire season. This group of talented actors was on their game all season and took the sitcom to incedible heights. There simply has been nothing since that has approach stop to matching Seinfeld’s brilliance.

Just for the Junior Mint episode alone, but the contest to sight who can go the longest without, you know, is extraordinary. I Fancy George’s mother; how I appreciate seeing her in her hospital bed, berating him for yet another transgression, (What is it with you; who are you; I don’t know you any more!”) and George’s reaction to his mother’s next door neighbor-patient when she gets a spongebath is hilarious (and in another reveal, a young guy gets a spongebath, equally hilarious), and of course, the Spin…IMHO, George’s parents are one of the best aspects of this fantastiuc show; I bask in Jerry’s parents also, his father at the doctor’s office when he is fillling out the patient information perform and gets to the STD piece is a riot; he says “That’s it! They got my name and my phone number; that’s it!” And later in the room where he waits for the doctor when he thinks someone stole his wallet…well, you unprejudiced have to gape it. I was so upset when Seinfeld went off the air, but now I can peep these classics over and over and over again whenever I want and it really doesn’t accumulate any better than that. And the peripheral characters are so advantageous you want them to be a regular share of the show; e.g, the grumpy ragged man Jerry volunteered to select care of; the Rabbi in Elaine’s building; George Steinbrenner; Tim Whatley, the irregular dentist; Elaine’s roommate; and my accepted of all, Jimmy…Jimmy’s DOWN; Jimmy’s got a compound demolish! Thank God for DVD!

Forbidden Planet is an extraordinary movie and no Sci-Fi fan should be without it. The transfer on the 50th Anniversary and Ultimate Collector’s Editions is amazing. I’ve never seen the film search for so shimmering, crisp and vibrant. The included documentaries and bonus footage are very engaging and not to be missed.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Forbidden Planet! Click Here

A word of warning though, the Ultimate Collector’s Edition is a bit of a rip off. The included Robby the Robot toy was the main reason I bought this location and it’s powerful smaller (and less detailed) than the images lead you to hold. I haven’t opened mine, but it looks like it’s not even articulated. Definitely not worth the extra money I had to pay. The lobby card reporductions are nice, as is the tin case, but unless you idea to exhibit these it’s hard to explain the added cost.

Be shimmering, skip the Ultimate Collector’s Edition and seize the 50th Anniversary Edition. You’ll catch fair the sincere same transfer and bonus material without the cheap toy and lobby cards.

It’s silly, me being a fan of science fiction and movies in general, why it is that it took me so long to catch around to watching Forbidden Planet (1956) . Section of it is I feel as if I’ve already seen the film, as clips from it are usually always shown whenever someone does a documentary on science fiction in film, as it’s fair such an influential and fantastic portion of work. Now, I’ve heard that this movie is loosely based on Shakespeare’s play, The Tempest, but since I’ve never read it, I can’t comment on comparisons between the play and the film. The film stars Walter Pidgeon, Anne Francis, Leslie Nielsen, and Robby the Robot (Yes, the robot gets a cover credit. If you study on the Internet Movie Database, you’ll net it’s even listed as an actor) .

The myth is about a spacecraft sent to learn what exactly happened to a previous spacecraft and its’ crew, which had been deployed many years prior, and has since not been heard from in some time. This fresh mission is under the snarl of Commander John J. Adams (Nielsen), and soon win themselves on come to the destination planet of the now lost ship. On their arrival, they find an ominous message, from the planet, issued by a member of the current crew, Dr. Edward Morbius (Pidgeon) . Despite his warnings, they land and are soon met by a robot named Robby, who escorts them to Morbius’ rather posh abode. Here we learn all the members of that fated crew have been killed off, except for Morbius and his daughter (whom Morbius had when he procreated with another member of the novel crew), Altaira (Francis), by some unseen, yet completely substandard, force, to which Morbius and his daughter seem immune. Not expecting to score any survivors, Commander Adams now has to change his plans to include trying to contact his superiors and receive further instructions on how to recede, despite Morbuis’ protests that they should leave as soon as possible, leaving him and his daughter gradual so that he may continue his research. What is his research? Well, it seems that many hundreds of thousands of years ago, the planet was inhabited by a highly advanced hurry of being called the Krell, who mysteriously vanished seemingly overnight in comparison to their collective power, intelligence and abilities, and while their cities have long since gone, a big deal of their technology survived underneath the ground, and Morbius has managed to glean some view of these beings, even being able to pry bits of information and such in the 20 curious years that he’s been here. This wonderful discovery is certainly worth writing home about, and so Commander Adams begins having the men disassemble the ship to form a draw grand enough to send a message relieve to his superiors, and in the meantime, starts making time with Morbius’ daughter, who’s never seen a man outside of her father, and is uneducated in the ways of woo. Things seem to be progressing until an unseen tedious night attack on the ship damages some crucial elements needed for communication, so an electrified perimeter is spot up to prevent the come of any more unannounced and unwelcome visitors. We soon accept out the fence works, as a tall beastie, normally invisible, now highlighted by the electrical novel, tries to attack the ship, killing a few defenders. What exactly is the nature of this beast? Is it somehow connected to the Krell? Does Morbius know more than he’s letting on? Will any salvage off this planet alive? What the heck were these Krell up to anyway?

Forbidden Planet is inspirational, in my notion, because it presents an well developed and idea out account above and beyond the usual `scary alien’ fare we saw in the early 50’s. Similar to The Day the Earth Stood Level-headed (1951), it brought a level of intelligence to the genre while managing to also entertain. Basically, whatever level you conception the film on, it will provide enjoyment. It also hallmarked the first film appearance of Robby the Robot, probably one of the most celebrated, recognizable, and enduring icons in science fiction film history. Also, it is distinguished to mark, this is the first film to exhaust an entirely electronically unexcited musical accumulate. Stereotypical characterizations appear to beget the various roles, but since the film was releases a pleasant 14 years before I was even born, I can’t aid but wonder if the stereotypes started here, given the influence of the film. The production value overall is lavish and indicates runt expense was spared in bringing the chronicle to life. The special effects, even by today’s standards, search for remarkably splendid, and the realism in the matte painting backgrounds is truly spectacular. The tour of the immense underground Krell facility really stood out in my mind, properly highlighting the enormity and intricacies at the same time. Dwelling holes? Yeah, I noticed a few of them (like how’d Robby indicate up at the raze despite every circuit being blown? And that self-destruct mechanism at the destroy…that seemed a bit convenient and lacking suited safeguards one would normally apply as to not accidentally cause it to go off), but these tend to pale in comparison to the overall film. As a whole, I assume anyone would be hard pressed not to respond this as one of the more influential films in the genre, and unbiased a lot of fun in general.

Warner Brother’s gets points from providing an pleasurable widescreen print (the DVD is double sided, with fullscreen on the flipside), but loses some in their complete lack of special features other than an modern theatrical trailer. I come by it glorious dark that this film doesn’t rate the special features we so often seek on fresh releases. Normally I’d be tickled with a favorable looking print, but surely obvious films deserve some preferential treatment, and this, in my thought, is one of them. Oh well…

Hi…

this is a immense movie..grand transfer and sizable extra features…commentary, roundtable with hall of fame baseball players…bravo special …fresh day update on the sincere field of dreams space….BUT, and its a titanic one…it does NOT hold the extraordinary hour long making of documentary from the initial release!!! as well as many of the other bonus features….

Buy,Download, Or Stream Field of Dreams! Click Here

so…..if you are a fan, you will most likely want both editions…

I don’t understand why they couldn’t have included the bonus features from the first “collectors” edition to gain this the definitive whine…but Like ON GOLDEN POND …you fetch a newer edition with ample extras which don’t duplicate the current….

anyway…objective notion I’d warn fans out there who are thinking of “trading up” for the current edition…

I fancy baseball. Not only in its purest obtain is it the greatest game ever invented, it is also the only game that completely and thoroughly transcends and binds our country to past, exhibit, and future–generation to generation.

Director Phil Alden Robinson’s FIELD OF DREAMS pays homage to baseball’s majestic, magical link to nostalgia. When a struggling Iowa farmer, Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) begins “hearing voices” and subsequently plows under his cornfield and builds a baseball diamond, he becomes a pariah to his community–to his family. But Ray knows he’s tapped into a special level of consiousness: a radiant, soothing karma that slowly but wonderfully manifests itself throughout this improbable film. The baseball field itself becomes a portal to another world, enabling players from baseball’s Golden Age to return. To play baseball. As the film draws to its dramatic, captivating ending, Ray surveys his field of dreams and remarks, “This is perfect.”

Buy,Download, Or Stream Field of Dreams! Click Here

And it is.

Kevin Costner turns in his finest performance. Ray Liotta, Amy Madigan, Timothy Busfield, and the expansive Burt Lancaster are exceptional. But it is James Earl Jones, who plays disgruntled author Terrence Mann and eventual soul mate to Kinsella, who is the catalyst that takes this film to a higher level. And FIELD OF DREAMS goes to that level, and beyond, like a homerun leaving the upper deck. Highly, highly recommended.

…but considering the minimal budget (20 million dollars American) and the honorable Mongolian (some areas so isolated that unique roads had to be built to find the film crews there) locations filmed, this was a incredible movie that was well-paced for an introduction to the life of Temudjin, who would become the Genghis Khan.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan! Click Here

Despite the vulgar budget, nothing in the movie looks cheaply filmed; everything looks like that of a gigantic budget film six times more expensive, from costumes to makeup (and the craggly dirt buildup on Temudjin during his time in captivity) . I don’t teach Mongolian, so I can’t reveal whether the accents spoken are accurately Mongolian, but for an American audience, it was spacious for authenticity (rather than having them notify Russian or Kazakh) .

The movie excels in two particular aspects which really effect this one more than objective a casual ancient-world flick; the battles and the people.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan! Click Here

While Genghis Khan is demonized in the West as a barbarous conqueror, he is seen like a hero in the East, and this movie serves to display him as both and neither, making him more than honest dark or white, but a fully fleshed out person with ambitions to uniting all the Mongol tribes as one beneath him. He is utterly believable as a human being, fallible, and seemingly very mighty driven by his admire for his wife and children, whom he nevertheless must leave constantly to fulfill his dream.

There is also Jamukha, who manages to be both a piggish, slothy figure, and a qualified, right friend to Temudjin, when their dreams conflict and they become enemies, with a very painful and realistic portrayal of unprejudiced why Jamukha would betray Temudjin, and his lack of joy in facing his opponent on a field of battle.

Then there’s the battles. As any Ancient/Medieval war movie to be expected, it is bloody. My only annoyances in a puritanic-historian device were the suits of armor, which seemed not to be made of powerful metal as they would have been in Mongolian times.

Another minor thing that becomes a cramped excessive, and arguably rather like a recurring joke is shots of blood, showing them being spilled in thousands of thick drops rather than in fountains or bursts of liquid.

The final battle sequence manages to both use the Mongolian expertise in archery and cavalry and innovate with something both insanely perilous and never before seen in Medieval battle depictions. Likely seen in the trailer, as Jamukha sends the bulk of his cavalry force at Temudjin’s center, he unleashes a very microscopic number of thickly armored cavalry, armed with double curves swords, which then urge through the enemy cavalry, using the swords to prick at the enemy’s sides like Scythed Chariots.

The armored cavalry is a kamikaze force, as after brutalizing the enemy cavalry, Temudjin has his archers unleash a flood of arrows on the force, killing the cavalry on both sides down to a man.

Overall a immense movie, which doesn’t sacrifice the macro-story of Genghis Khan and his dream of a Mongol empire for the micro-story of Temudjin’s worship life. Of which I wrote virtually nothing about.

Recent Best Foreign Oscar Film nominee `Mongol’ is an impressive myth. Telling the first installment of the life and times of Ghengis Khan, we pick up more than a history lesson, but a personal record of a fraternal feud for power. Filmed with breathtaking cinematography and a sound that should have garnered a separate nomination, the movie is a sweeping drama, complete with battles that form similar `300′ scenes certain digitalized formula.

Although the film goes ahead (mostly in chronological order) with several “One Year Later” and other useful captions, we lose ourselves in a myth of one man’s struggle for survival among his Khan and the adore interests that shape, bind and maintain tribal rivalries and aspirations. We follow the coming-of-age footsteps of Temujin (Tadanobu Asano) and his older rival Targutai (Amandu Mamadakov) who both strive for power and read the oracles of gods like Tengri, whom they beckon for abet.

Some of the battles are Trojan-like in thrust. Temujin will spare no one for Borte (Khulan Chuluun), his lifelong esteem interest. Between his patient endurance and his admire, Temujin becomes a leader who can match wills with any Mongol tribe. Going from tribal feuds to a far-reaching dynasty, the film chronicles the actual human faces that made history happen.

Before becoming Khan, he must master the elements. Between the harshness of tundra to humiliation and hunger, the engaging edge of life known for bitterly frigid winters, execute or shatter the existence of people who rely on their armies, shelter, and horses to survive.

It cannot be emphasized enough how the lingering beauty of each frame is consuming enough to account for viewing this two hour and five small film. Furthermore, the haunting audio accentuating tribal customs and battle scenes resonate with mesmerizing grandeur. Although being reserved is perhaps a cultural trait, I felt some of the scenes could have added a bit more zest to the acting, but great of the intensity is non-verbal and convincing indeed. Writer-director, Sergei Bodrov, deserves heaping praises for building such a tightly built drama and some truly exquisitely shot scenes.

Although released last year and up for 2007’s Oscar jury, both the cinema and DVD releases came about this year, so it’s not too leisurely to possess ‘Mongol’ as one of the truly profitable epics and one of the best movies to reach out all year.

Watching “Last Chance Harvey,” I began to assume about other such films and realized that I usually referred to them in my reviews as classic romantic comedies. But what exactly do I mean when I say that? In all likelihood, I mean that readers should go easy on the film because we’re extinct to those movies following a very specific formula, and never mind the fact that they’re contrived and cliché. I could very well call “Last Chance Harvey” a classic romantic comedy, because goodness knows it adheres to a tried and fair structure. In spite of that, this is the one romantic comedy of 2008 that works the best, in astronomical piece because of stars Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson; whereas other filmmakers would cast young, energetic actors in a yarn about sex, writer/director Joel Hopkins has cast two older actors in a narrative is about treasure. Because they’re more experienced, they actually bring something to the table. They seem respectable as people.

But more importantly, they have chemistry, not necessarily as lovers but definitely as companions. In other words, it seems plausible that such people could meet in accurate life and plunge in care for. Hoffman plays Harvey Shine, a jingle writer from Current York who always wanted to be a jazz pianist. It was easy for me to empathize with him, a somber, soft-spoken man who always feels ignored in a tremendous crowd. Maybe there’s a fraction of him that wanted it that way; he’s been known to embarrass himself and those closest to him, so at a distinct point, it’s better to honest pause out of the intention. He openly admits that he wasn’t the greatest father or husband, and while there’s no hostility between him or his daughter and ex-wife, there is a detached yet prominent sense of disappointment on all accounts. And now, no one at his music company seems to be taking him seriously. More to the point, he’s on the verge of losing his job.

When Harvey flies to London to aid his daughter’s wedding, he meets a Heathrow employee named Kate Walker (Thompson), who, as it turns out, is stuck in her contain emotional rut. She says she would like nothing more than to meet someone and inaugurate a relationship, but since she’s been let down so many times, she may be getting passe to it. Later on in the film, she admits that being disappointed is more comfortable that being harm. Mighty like Harvey, she also feels ignored in crowds, as when she’s on a blind date that starts off well but ends up as a social gathering that leaves her off in the sidelines. Her only social outlets are her coworkers and her mother (Eileen Atkins), an entertaining character herself; she calls Kate constantly, ravishing remarkable to the point of insanity, and she seems to contemplate her Polish next-door neighbor is a mass murderer who burns his victims in a tall barbecue shed.

Harvey and Kate exhaust a unbelievable afternoon together, and this is despite the fact that they don’t know very distinguished about each other. We don’t know if a care for is developing at this point, but it’s sure that a friendship is. While a bit mild and reserved, Harvey is kind towards Kate, and he seems genuinely eager in what she has to say. Kate is willing to go along with it, although her nervous smiles and hesitant laughter suggest that she has absolutely no view why any of this is happening. From out of nowhere comes a charming American man, and even though he has a lot of emotional baggage, there’s the sense that she’s eager in helping him deal with it. Most likely, that’s because she has baggage of her own; after convincing her to join him at his daughter’s wedding reception, there comes a point when she feels exactly the same as she did the night of her blind date. It’s up to Harvey to create her feel like she can be a allotment of the crowd.

There are some spirited moments between Harvey and his daughter, Susan (Liane Balaban) . Even though they admire each other in the strictest sense, they are more friendly friends than they are father and daughter, which is why she wants her stepfather, Brian (James Brolin), to give her away at the wedding. Harvey is understandably afflict, but he can’t discontinue excited at Brian forever; after all, he did grasp over for Harvey when his marriage failed, giving Susan the stability and attention she needed. This would be a plain account were Brian made to be vindictive and hostile. Thankfully, he isn’t–he’s decent and accommodating, a fact Harvey most likely has wretchedness accepting. There are few things worse than disliking someone without having a reason.

So yes, I guess I can call “Last Chance Harvey” a classic romantic comedy. But that doesn’t automatically build it a abominable movie. What really made it work well was the thoughtful relationship between Harvey and Kate, which isn’t based on physical attraction so noteworthy as it’s based on the need to be loved. We don’t accept too great of that in romantic comedies these days. Even the inspiring “Definitely, Maybe” and “My Best Friend’s Girl” were only committed to catering to younger audiences, which is a shame because the filmmakers missed some stout opportunities to invent the characters at a more used level. “Last Chance Harvey” gives its characters some degree of believability, and this is in spite of the story’s formulaic elements. I greatly enjoyed this film, and I’m determined most audiences will also.

By no means do I damn with faint praise when suggesting that this is a “minute” film. Rather, only to suggest that it covers a brief period of time (a few days), in a single setting (London), focuses primarily on only two characters, and there few area developments. Briefly, Harvey Shine (Dustin Hoffman) is employed by an advertising agency in Manhattan as a jingle writer when we are introduced to him. Almost immediately we sense that he is dissatisfied with both his career (he would consume to rep a living as a jazz composer and performer) and with the unusual plot of his life (he is divorced and apparently alienated from his adult daughter, Susan, who is about to be married in London) . The title refers to both situations: Charley is advised by his boss Marvin (Richard Schiff who played the character Toby Ziegler on the television program, The West Flit) that his job is in jeopardy. After a very brief encounter upon arrival at Heathrow Airport with Kate Walker (Emma Thompson) seeking to win move information from passengers, Harvey is saddened to learn from Susan (Liane Balaban) that she has decided that her stepfather Brian (James Brolin) will accompany her down the aisle. Of course, Harvey encounters Kate again and then….

The acting is outstanding. The setting is especially appropriate for what happens to a stunned Novel Yorker, among strangers in a unusual city, at a time when he is running out of options in all areas of his life. Kate has concerns of her enjoy but seems less afraid, probably because she fulfills at least some needs by comforting and reassuring her mother Maggie Walker (Eileen Atkins) who calls her constantly throughout the day (and evening), concerned about trivial matters. We know almost nothing else about Kate’s private life, other than the absence of romance and few (if any) chances of finding it. She clearly does not wish to be injure and is sensibly reluctant to become enthusiastic with anyone, even a stranger who is clearly gloomy, feels rejected, and in need of attention and kindness.

Five Star ratings of films should be reserved for “classics” and that is especially correct of romantic comedies such as It Happened One Night, Tiny Shop Around the Corner, Sleepless in Seattle, and You’ve Got Mail. Last Chance Harvey is not in their class. However, I mediate Hoffman and Thompson are not only wonderful but have charming chemistry, the film is well-made, respectful of awkward adult situations with potentially serious consequences, and arrives at its blissful ending with a exquisite plausibility.

Sony marketing calls its current DVD presentation of The Model Shop a “martini movie” — the implication being that the “movie” ought to be laughed off as a camp curiosity. Don’t gain it. Jacques Demy’s 1969 The Model Shop is vital and influential. Its arrival to DVD is cause for celebration.

With forty years’ hindsight, we can contemplate The Model Shop’s expansive debt to Antonioni’s L’avventura, that vast 1960 landmark: Both films purchase residence in desert locales. Both focus on disillusioned architects grasping for meaning and direction. Both architects profess admiration for the emotional fullness of Baroque architecture. Both men betray their girlfriends — and both in the arms of tawdry exhibitionists. The list goes on and on.

But where L’avventura makes the most of its generous dusky and white photography, The Model Shop goes one better by deploying shining color to negate mood and idea and feeling — and does so with the same canny impact as in the best color art photography (the esteemed William Eggleston comes to mind) . When in the final frames, the film’s action renounces color and cuts to the blackest unlit, the dramatic edit conveys unsettling truths about the lead character’s spot. In this one heroic go, The Model Shop distills and outperforms Antonioni (and seems to have provided the template for the “Paint it Dusky” ending to Stanley Kubrick’s 1987 Pudgy Metal Jacket.) This and its lead character’s emotional quandary at film’s slay also appear to have influenced the memorable ending to Quentin Tarantino`s 1997 Jackie Brown.

Throughout The Model Shop’s deceptively simple chronicle are poetic clues to its beget self-knowing intentions (all of those oil wells, want ads, and so on are all well-placed and all there for valid reason) . In our occupy time of digital histrionics, The Model Shop’s unexcited engagement with human feeling and human imperfection comes across as original and alive. Its photorealist-worthy portrayal of West LA buildings, streets, and parking lots makes the Southern California cityscape as integral to the film’s strength as the Mediterranean island views in L’avventura. And if the sheer unspeakable beauty of Los Angeles has ever been effect on film with more loving attention than in The Model Shop, would someone please speed up and divulge me where?

The Model Shop is unforgettable cinema. A genuine thank you to Sony for making it available at last.

Now. About that “martini” marketing…

Jacques Demy’s hope, when he first made LOLA, the character (and same actress Anouk Aimee) who reappears in MODEL SHOP, was to invent his bear Comedie Humaine….beginning with characters from LOLA reappearing in BAY OF ANGELS, and then on to UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG where one reappearing actor sings about another character he was in appreciate with in LOLA. It would have continued into YOUNG GIRLS OF ROCHFORT but Nino Castelnuovo was not available and so it was rewritten and moved out of line as Portion IV. In 1968 Demy closed the circle with MODEL SHOP. Initially Demy wanted a modern young actor, Harrison Ford, to play the lead, but Columbia felt a name would be better for the lead and Gary Lockwood had objective done 2001. The music, done by SPIRIT, was Demy’s second choice, as he had become pleasurable with a unique rock group from UCLA, THE DOORS, but by the time the film was ready THE DOORS were world eminent and time runt. However, SPIRIT created a find that compliments Demy’s impressionistic belief of Venice CA, W. Hollywood and Beverly Hills in the slow 60’s. Not as visually intense as UMBRELLAS, but as psychologically insiteful as LOLA and BAY OF ANGELS, MODEL SHOP offers the viewer a moment in time, caught in amber. For trivia enthusiasts, the actor playing Alexandra Hays’ boyfriend, the actor/model Tom Fielding, left acting and became a film writer/director….PSYCHO II, Veil AND DAGGER, Terror NIGHT, CHILD’S PLAY and a handfull of TV films of Stephen King novels.

The film is an exciting peep at a very American time and dwelling as seen by a French Americaphile film maker.
